Guru Nanak Jayanti is also known as Gurupurab and is an auspicious occasion for the followers of Sikhism. This day is celebrated as the birth anniversary of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji. This day is celebrated on the day of Kartik Purnima, which is the fifteenth lunar day in the month of Kartik according to the Hindu calendar. According to the Gregorian calendar, the day falls in the month of November. This year it will be the 551st birth anniversary of Guru Nanak and will be celebrated on Monday, 30 November. Let us tell that this day is celebrated to commemorate and honor the life of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism. He was born in 1469 in Nankana Sahib, Punjab. It is said that his birth was a symbol of divinity. He was a firm believer in everyone and he also believed that a person can connect to God through his prayers.

All the teaching of Guru Nanak Dev Ji is in the holy book Guru Granth Sahib. The festival of Guru Nanak Jayanti begins to be celebrated in Gurdwaras a few days before. A procession known as Nagarkirtan is organized. The procession is led by five men, known as Panj Pyare. The main day of Guruparva begins with morning hymns, followed by prayers and stories performed in praise of the Guru. Later, after the langar there is a night of Ardas which is held in the gurdwara.
